Donnybrook on Closers

Sorry boys.  Late-night card game.  This post is bound to be lame.  If anybody’s interested, Chris Woy lost his shirt, Acc won a few late hands to come out looking good, Johnny Fantastic just about broke even, and Marshall had to beg for cab money for a ride home.  I got a little lucky, so Marshall and Woy had to carry my winnings out in a wheelbarrow.  But who’s counting?

Raoul, you are always welcome, bro.  Come on in, defend your boy, throw in your two cents.  We’re all game.  It gives everyone a little perspective.  Surprisingly, it does seem like we hit a bit of a nerve on this, though.  Ordinarily this stuff rolls right off your back.  The Red Sox fan who reads BPS and the liberal who watches O’Reilly.  To happymed’s point, it wasn’t anybody’s intent to admonish anybody.  Papelbon’s good.  No getting around it.  Even though he still looks like Private Pyle from Full Metal Jacket….  “What is a jelly donut doing in your foot locker Private Papelbon??!!”

Grossman made a good point in his comment.  Wagner would have been desperate for that win.  Even though he hasn’t been completely lights out, I think at this point the Mets would rather win or lose with their guy, being that they are the ones with home field at stake.  And I took it one step further.  I think Jose Reyes should have played in this game.  Let’s face it.  The Mets aren’t going to play another meaningful game until October.  That’s three months away.  Reyes has a cut on his finger.  Even if by some strange twist of fate he ripped open his finger and had to go on the DL, it still wouldn’t put a dent in the Mets standing in the NL playoff race.  This was the only game for the rest of the year with something on the line.  And based on the Mets performance on the road against the AL, I think home field is pretty high on their list of priorities.  So if Reyes was going to pick a game to play in spite of a minor injury, he should have picked this one.  I have to believe he would have been good for at least a run.

Amber, love your spirit.  Great addition to the BPS.  Kaylee, you seem to have obliterated your bedtime.

Umair, great link on the All-Star game coming to the Stadium.  I immediately called Acc to see if our season tickets are going to get us in.

Mark from MLBlogs has now actually posted twice on the BPS.  Wow.  This one looked like a form, post, though.  Like everybody got one…  Kind of takes the zing out of it…

That’s it boys.  I’ll be in section 24 on Friday night, and it looks like Monday as well.  I need to get this second half started right…

Thoroughly enjoy discussing the season and look forward to the second half.
If this season plays out like the last eight, I'll tip my hat, buy a thesaurus and be back next year.

No harm, no foul.

The 'don't compare' comments would pretty much tie my hands from discussing that aspect of the game.

If he falls apart in the second half, I'm here to take my lumps.

p.s.

I'm just glad I never mentioned his nickname or I would have got pounded for sure!

"LITTLE MO" :)

See Raoul, I thought that you would have been a little more clever than "little Mo" and gone with "Skeletor"

I think I speak for everyone here who says you are invited, your pet is invited, shoot....even the Toxic Avenger is invited. Just don't expect to not be challenged on something you type. That is the beauty of this world we live in and this "blog universe" that we inhabit.

I still say the drill Sgt. in Full Metal Jacket got robbed that year he didn't win an Oscar. It is hard to pull off scary and funny at the same time

"Donnybrook"

I haven't heard that term since Gorilla Monsoon died

My bad for taking the 'don't compare' literally instead of the rant it was.

Hey, someday Rivera will retire, the Yankees will bring up a new closer and it will be my turn to get indignant when he gets compared to Little Mo.

"Little Mo".... hahaha you freaking wish. And the comments about our future closer being compared to your current closer is just a crazy as you comparing Papelbon to Mo. When Papelbon gets a few years under his belt then we can say he's on his way. This guy could fall off the face of the earth tomorrow..... and all he would have to show for his big league career is half a season of good work in the closers role.

Talking about this makes me laugh, because I dont think anyone could or ever will compare to Mo. He's one of a kind:)

Thanks Mike for the comment on your post. You should meet me in person... that spirit is overwhelming. It get's me in trouble with people who disagree with me:)

I think it's about time they bring the All-Star game to Yankee Stadium. It's perfect.... the All-Star game..... then a World Championship to close up the House the Ruth Built!!

Ok, no more 'crazy' closer comments from me.

I'd like to mention our SS though. His 284 AVG is better than any of his years with the Marlins. Little Derek has been a pleasant surprise.

Mike?

white sox coming to your town. should be a good series. sox @ yanks, then @ detroit. sorry yanks but youve got to lose this series at home since KC isnt much of a speed bump, and the champs have to kick your butts so they can overtake the Tigers in Detroit.
Id bet Papelbons future is in the rotation. Not this season, but maybe as soon as next year. I cancelled my mlblog so I have time to stalk other ones now.

Im curious to see how the ChiSox rotation rebounds and comes out of the break, what better test than NY at Yankee Stadium, even if there are a few Royal cast-offs on the field. Im sure you'll be hearing from me this weekend.

"white sox coming to your town. should be a good series..."

That's a no-lose series for Boston. We'll either get some Division breathing room or have a two sock wild-card race. :)

I'm so scared I double pumped the Submit button, sorry.

Your SS Raoul...another guy playing way over his head offensively...here's to a second half where some people come down to earth and some others get healthy in a hurry..

sydney poncone (sic)? Is this the best Brian can do?

I wonder what the addition of Sydney Ponson will do for the rotation. I hope he doesn't come here with the attitude he had with the Orioles, we don't need it. If he can be a solid number 5 or a guy out of the pen and do his job, then I'm all for it.

hey guys,
SIdney ponson cant throw lucky

he will do nothing that is my opinion anyway he shouldbe in the pen.

Back to my red sox game.

Cashman signs Ponson. I wanted to ask you, what is your view on Brian Cashman? I have noticed Yankee fans assume their front office people are the best in the business. Cashman has no track record, he came up as an intern. To judge a general manager, assume the number of wins his team has with the amount of payroll he works with. Here are some of the many failures of cashman in the last couple years.

Tony Womack

Not resigning Jon Lieber

Jaret Wright

Not trading for Schilling and allowing the Red Sox to get him for next to nothing

Carl Pavano

Not pursuing Beltran

Aquiring Kevin Brown

Kyle Farnsworth

Kenny Lofton

Bringing back Mike Stanton

Bringing back Jeff Nelson

Signing Kelly Stinnett

He seems to hide under the notion "The Boss makes the bad choices". Every bad signing is almost like "Hey the boss called for that move". Maybe a change would be beneficial.
